This year's talk and discussion meeting GVC/DECHEMA (Bad Wildungen, Germany, May, 6-8, 2013) stood under the motto Efficient Engineering and Plant Design in Life Sciences and Food Technology. About 120 expert visitors from industry and science enjoyed this opportunity to professional development. On the schedule, there were lectures about New enzymes and enzyme-technological engineering, Multi-scale and continuous processes and Modeling and Process optimization.

INOSIM took the part of informing the vistors about the benefits of consulting services for process engineering in process and plant design. Our staff member Katrin Sulzbacher spoke about Simulation-based analysis of processes with high variation. She explained that production processes in bioprocessing and biotechnological food processing often feature high deviations due to the “shape of the day” of the microorganisms involved. Additionally, uncertaintanties in the process, caused by aging adsorption materials together with unpredictable dysfunctions in the production, play a critical role.

In such cases, process simulation is a helpful means; it allows an analysis on how variances influence the production process as a whole. The simulation enables counteractions to capture and balance variances. In Katrin´s lecture, this would be exemplified by the production process for monoclonal antibodies.
